Yesterday morning in Marion as police responded to a shooting, resulting in an officer firing at a suspect still at large. WISH-TV reported that Marion Police Department officers rushed to the scene after reports of shots fired at the intersection of West Fourth Street and State Road 18/South Western Avenue eastbound.
The tumult was first noticed when an officer saw an SUV near West First Street and D Street; shots were fired from the vehicle at an individual on the sidewalk, the vehicle matched the description from an earlier “shots fired” call, and the confrontation escalated as the officer discharged his weapon toward a passenger of the SUV who subsequently fled on foot, said Indiana State Police in a news release detailed by FOX59.
No casualties were reported despite the public disruption and property damage evidenced by bullet holes in nearby homes. A local resident near the intersection of 1st Street and D Street recounted the ordeal to FOX59, describing hearing shots and seeing a police officer engage with the shooter. Still, the suspect's identity remains unknown, and an investigation spearheaded by the Indiana State Police Peru Post is underway.
Residents caught in the crossfire experienced significant distress with one homeowner finding a bullet had pierced their window: "There's a hole in our window. He said, 'Well, those bullets went through our window,' and then he turned and said, 'and went through our cupboard door,'" the homeowner explained to FOX59, expressing gratitude that no physical harm came to her family.
Authorities have yet to reveal the identity or duty status of the officer involved, according to WBIW's coverage, with all findings expected to be reviewed by the Grant County Prosecutor's Office.
