An evening skydiving exercise turned tragic on Wednesday as two skydivers collided mid-air near Rochelle, with one individual confirmed dead and another injured in the aftermath. The incident took place around 6:50 p.m. in the vicinity of the Chicagoland Skydiving Center, located at 8887 S. Illinois 251. According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, the collision caused both jumpers' canopies to collapse, with their reserve parachutes being deployed shortly thereafter.
The Ogle County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that both reserve parachutes were indeed activated, but unfortunately, one skydiver was unable to gain control of the descent. This skydiver, a 40-year-old man, suffered significant injuries from the fall. He was rushed to Rochelle Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Details regarding the identity of the deceased have not been disclosed pending family notification. On the other hand, the second skydiver was discovered near Koritz Field–Rochelle Municipal Airport and carried to the same hospital, bearing minor injuries, as the ABC7 Chicago report informs.
The accident has brought about an investigation by local authorities, in conjunction with federal officials, to unravel the sequence of events leading to the fatal collision. While skydiving-related incidents often involve risks associated with the sport, such mid-air collisions are infrequent and are usually subject to rigorous investigation to ensure the continued safety of skydiving enthusiasts.
