Local residents and visitors are finding the gates to Naperville's Centennial Beach closed today following a grim discovery there Thursday evening. A 27-year-old man was found unresponsive in the water at the popular summer spot, which is situated in a former stone quarry known for its recreational offerings, including diving boards and sand volleyball. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital but, unfortunately, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and an air of solemnity hovers over the community.
The Naperville Park District confirmed the closure of the beach on Friday, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation and to honor the deceased's family during this difficult time. The beach, also referred to as a "swimming hole" by locals according to NBC Chicago, will remain off-limits to the public as a respect for privacy is observed and officials seek to answer the many questions dangling in the wake of this tragedy.
Residents like Scott Baker, who grew up swimming at Centennial Beach, expressed their shock at the news. "I was really surprised," Baker told ABC7, adding, "It's a big piece of the community. I mean, I walk by here every day just because of the river walk and the path." His comments reflect the close-knit nature of the Naperville community, for whom the beach is not just a leisure spot, but a local landmark woven into the fabric of daily life.
The investigation is ongoing, with both the Naperville Park District and local law enforcement refraining from releasing details at this time. The DuPage County Coroner's Office has yet to identify the man.
