Rushville Consolidated High School students Megan Alexander and Aundrea Berkemeier have scored a significant win in the form of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, an announcement made by State Reps. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown) and Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville), who championed the support for these rising teachers.
In a competitive field where a record-breaking 1,091 students threw their hats in the ring, Alexander and Berkemeier emerged as part of the nearly 300 recipients awarded for the 2025-2026 academic year, the scholarship offering a substantial boost up to $40,000 to be doled out over the course of their college education, the scholarship stipulates an agreement to teach within eligible Indiana schools for a minimum of five years after graduation, a commitment not only to their personal academic pursuits but to the future of Indiana's educational landscape.
Designed to alleviate some of the looming financial strain that so often accompanies higher education, this scholarship is Indiana's legislative effort to seed the state's schools with quality educators, "I strongly believe these young educators will make a positive impact in Indiana classrooms," Criswell stated, citing the significance of this financial support in empowering students to prioritize their academic and career focuses.
Patterson outlined the criteria for the scholarship, noting that successful applicants must graduate in the top 20 percent of their high school class earn a score in the 20th percentile on standardized tests like the SAT or ACT or hold a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0, Patterson sees the scholarship as not only a financial boon but a testament to the recipients' dedication, "I’m encouraged to see local students stepping up to teach the next generation and receive this support for their journey as future educators," she remarked on the scholarship's role in nurturing the teachers of tomorrow.
