A 43-year-old man, identified as Corey Michael Dean by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, has died while in custody at the Vista Detention Facility. Officials state that Dean, a resident of San Diego County who was facing burglary and felony vandalism charges since June 15, was found unresponsive during a routine safety check by deputies at around 3 AM on Sunday.
Immediate attempts were made to resuscitate him with deputies on scene quickly activating 9-1-1, requesting medical help, and beginning to administer CPR. Despite the fast actions, Dean could not be revived and was declared dead approximately 20 minutes later, according to details from a news release by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. Paramedics and the Vista Fire Department took over lifesaving measures upon arrival, but to no avail. "The San Diego Sheriff's Office extends our sympathies to the Dean family and all those affected by Mr. Dean's passing," read the official statement.
Under standard procedures following in-custody deaths, an investigation has been initiated by the Sheriff's Homicide Unit to examine the incident fully. Further, the cause and manner of death are yet to be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office. The circumstances leading up to Dean's death are pending a comprehensive review, as reported by Hoodline.
