A tragic collision between a barge and a sailboat claimed the lives of two children and critically injured other passengers near Hibiscus Island in Miami. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the incident, which involved six individuals – five children and an adult counselor – aboard a sailboat that belonged to the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation. The sailboat sank in the aftermath of the collision yesterday, as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard. Initially, all parties were believed to have been rescued, but tragic developments emerged.
Authorities were alerted to the emergency around 11 a.m., and multiple agencies responded to the scene. The victims were quickly retrieved from the water by Miami Beach Fire Rescue crews, with assistance from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, as they endeavored to rapidly provide aide to the victims. However, sadly, two children, ages 7 and 13, were later pronounced dead upon their arrival at Jackson Memorial Hospital. An 8-year-old and an 11-year-old remain in critical condition, as per updates from emergency services. Meanwhile, a 19-year-old and a 12-year-old were rescued without the need of hospitalization.
The Miami Yacht Club, associated with the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, confirmed the sailboat's ownership and expressed its cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The children were in their final week of sailing lessons when the calamity unfolded, a detail outlined by the WSVN report. Witnesses described how they watched the events tragically play out. One bystander on a nearby boat recounted, “The crane just completely destroyed the boat. The boat just went under and I heard one girl shout ‘Help’ from under the crane. It was super sad and super scary.” Others in the vicinity were in disbelief, never having witnessed such an incident in their decades living there.
The identities of the victims are still not publicly known. The Coast Guard is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Sector Miami has established a 250-yard safety zone around the site where the sailing vessel remains submerged under the barge. As the investigation proceeds, the focus remains on the young lives cut short and those fighting to survive after what began as a serene day on the water turned to devastation. The Miami Youth Sailing Foundation and all involved emergency response teams have not yet commented on whether life jackets were in use at the time of the crash.
