Early Thursday morning, the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side was disrupted by a hit-and-run traffic crash that left two women in the hospital. According to CBS News, the incident took place just before 2:30 a.m. in the 300 block of North Central Avenue. A black SUV carrying the women was struck by a white SUV, which reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of Central Avenue and Lake Street.
The aftermath saw the occupants of the white SUV flee the scene on foot, leaving behind a scene strewn with questions and the injured requiring urgent care. The two victims were transported to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park; their conditions were described as fair by hospital representatives. In a separate report by ABC7 Chicago, it was confirmed that the two women were in the black SUV when the collision occurred.
In the wake of the crash, Chicago police are actively investigating the event. However, no citations have been issued at this time, and as of yet, no one has been taken into custody in connection to the hit-and-run. Additional details about the women involved, including their ages and the specific nature of their injuries, were not made available.
Area residents and commuters faced a temporary closure of the intersection as law enforcement and emergency services responded to the situation. Meanwhile, authorities are calling for any witnesses or those with information to come forward to aid in the identification and apprehension of the individuals responsible for the incident. The white SUV's occupants remain at large, and their disregard for the consequences of their actions underscores an ongoing concern for public safety on the streets of Chicago.
