In a bewildering incident at Miami International Airport (MIA), a woman was caught attempting to smuggle a pair of turtles in an unconventional manner—a situation that the TSA quickly brought to light. As reported by WSVN, the agency shared on social media that the individual had stuffed the turtles inside her bra, ultimately leading TSA to remind passengers to seek appropriate ways to travel safely with pets.
The TSA is no stranger to odd discoveries, and while turtles are not the most frequent culprits at security checkpoints, this incident is not without precedent. On March 7, prior to this event, a man was detained at Newark Liberty International Airport for concealing a 5-inch red-eared slider turtle in a rather personal space—his groin, TSA agents uncovered the reptile after a body scanner raised the alarm in his groin area, which resulted in the involvement of local authorities and the man missing his flight,
Tragically, one of the turtles involved in the MIA smuggling case did not survive. The surviving turtle, however, was handed over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, offering at least a sliver of restitution in the sad affair. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils that animals face when used in ill-conceived smuggling attempts, and of the necessity for travelers to adhere to guidelines that ensure the safety of animals during transport.
Additional coverage by KTLA depicted the photographs shared by the TSA—one showing the reptiles swathed in cellophane and cloth, and the other post-recovery, the TSA's post humorously, “We’re back with another desperate plea to stop hiding animals in weird places on your body before airport security.”
Travelers are continually encouraged to educate themselves on proper and legal procedures for transporting animals to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
