Yesterday's encounter at Bay Fair Station turned from a routine quality-of-life check into an arrest situation fraught with public safety concerns. The BART Police Department apprehended Brendon Collins for smoking on the platform, only to uncover significantly more serious criminal activity. The initial contact, stemming from a smoke cloud, spiraled into a discovery that put sharper things into perspective. According to BART Police Department reports, officers approached Collins, who provided a false name before his true identity was exposed through a fingerprint device.
Upon confirming his identity, officers learned that Collins was navigating post-incarceration life under the watchful eye of Alameda County's post-release community supervision program—known as PRCS. The record check did more than just turn up past felonies; it also dredged up a stay-away order from Hayward BART Station. The search that followed, mandated by his PRCS terms, unveiled a pair of unregistered loaded firearms equipped with extended magazines and a trove of marijuana.
The BART Police Department framed the situation with a sense of duty fulfilled, stating, "This is a great example of the result of BART PD officers being proactive in addressing quality-of-life issues in the BART System."
