A tragic incident unfolded in Pompano Beach last Thursday when a bicyclist lost her life after a collision involving a truck towing a boat. The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the 2700 block of Northeast 14th Street Causeway. CBS12 reports that the truck driver swerved to avoid the bicyclist, leading to the boat trailer becoming detached and striking parked vehicles.
Authorities identified the bicyclist as Anastazia Hitz, who reportedly crossed the street not at an official crosswalk according to information shared by Boca Post. The driver of the Ford F-450, named as Micheal Creque, maneuvered the vehicle in an attempt to avoid Hitz. However, by veering to the right, the boat trailer was dislodged and subsequently caused further havoc.
In the chaos that followed, the loose trailer collided with a BMW 640i and a Volkswagen Tiguan in a nearby business parking lot. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported besides the heartbreaking loss of Hitz. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded swiftly, transporting her to Broward Health North, where she was later pronounced deceased.
The BSO has clarified that neither speed, impairment, nor mechanical malfunction appeared to be contributing factors in the incident, indicating that the crash was not caused by typical culprits. Micheal Creque, the driver implicated in the incident, has not been found at fault thus far in the ongoing investigation.
