The Miles Farm in Blackford County, a century-long bastion of Indiana agriculture, has garnered the Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award for its steadfast presence since 1919, the recognition coming from the state itself. The Indiana State Fair was the stage where this farm, along with 94 others, were honored for their enduring contributions to the state’s agricultural heritage and economy.
Holding fast to the family-owned ethos of farming, the Miles Farm was recognized, according to Indiana House Republicans. The Hoosier Homestead Award is given to farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years, with the state bestowing centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial awards respectively. Working hard to preserve the state’s farming traditions, "Every year I look forward to recognizing local families," said State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City), who went on to congratulate "all on this outstanding achievement."
The award, which has been a tradition since 1976, lauds the family farms for their steady contribution towards feeding communities and fuelling Indiana’s economy. Having recognized over 6,000 farms since the program's inception, it is evident that agriculture is woven intricately into Indiana's fabric as State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) said to Indiana House Republicans, "Hoosier farm families are the heart of Indiana's agricultural success." He added, "Their commitment to protecting agricultural land, feeding communities and boosting our state's economy is something to be proud of, and this award is a small token of our appreciation for their lasting contributions."
The Miles Farm has now entered the echelons of the state's honored agricultural legacies, maintaining its operation across generations thus securing its place in Indiana's food supply chain. With the state fair often bustling with people, the Hoosiers given to farms and families at ceremonies every spring and summer ensures a continued celebration of Indiana’s rich agricultural history.
