Brownsburg's B&O Trail is getting a vivid slice of local culture and history painted onto its Northfield Tunnel, courtesy of Indiana muralist Elizabeth Wertman, better known by her professional moniker Blondebrush. In a recent unveiling, officials have shared that later this month, this prominent underpass will bear a new coat reflecting the town's deep-seated racing lineage. Wertman is set to fuse imagery of oval track cars and dragsters, a tip of the hat to the storied Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park nestled within the town's borders.

According to Brownsburg's official website, mural artist Wertman said, 'I love getting to bring a spark of inspiration to every mural I do, whether that is through bright colors or fun imagery.' Her murals feature multicolored designs and elements reflecting the communities where they are located. The new mural’s racing theme corresponds with the Brownsburg Racing Memorial Trail, which honors figures in Indiana’s racing history, including Rodger Ward.

This mural is part of Brownsburg's initiative to add art to its trails and public spaces. It will join other murals, including a 2023 piece by artist Zach Medler under CR 300 N., and artwork in the Ronald Reagan Parkway tunnel created approximately 15 years ago. The installation is scheduled ahead of the NHRA U.S. Nationals on August 23.

Blondebrush, also known as Wertman, has completed murals in various Indiana locations, including nature scenes in Greenfield and sports-themed artwork in Indianapolis. The new mural can be accessed from Cardinal Park, about a mile east toward Ronald Reagan Parkway, or from Virgil Park, approximately half a mile to the west.

Brownsburg park officials encourage visitors to photograph the completed mural and share their images using the hashtag #brownsburgparks. The Northfield Tunnel mural will be accessible to the public during the U.S. Nationals and for general weekend visits.
