Drivers in Bloomington should expect construction on North Walnut Street beginning August 4. According to an announcement from the City of Bloomington, the project will involve major improvements extending from the State Road 45 Bypass north to Old State Road 37, with completion scheduled for November. While North Walnut Street will remain open to traffic, motorists are advised to consider alternate routes.
Despite the ongoing construction, the city plans to maintain access to homes and businesses near the project area. The planned upgrades include asphalt resurfacing, curb ramp replacements, curb and guardrail repairs, removal of excess pavement, and installation of updated signage and pavement markings. These improvements are designed to enhance roadway conditions, improve safety features, and support more efficient traffic flow.
A central component of the project includes modifying southbound traffic on Walnut Street by reducing it to a single travel lane, eliminating the current merge pattern that shifts between one and two lanes. This adjustment is intended to simplify southbound traffic flow and minimize driver confusion. Additionally, a new left turn lane at the intersection of Walnut Street and Blue Ridge Drive is being added to provide a more direct route for motorists accessing the Blue Ridge Neighborhood.
The City of Bloomington notes that the project will receive financial support through Indiana’s Community Crossings Matching Grant program, which will fund up to 50 percent of the total cost. The program is designed to strengthen collaboration between the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and local governments.
