A former Boyd Anderson High School teacher has found himself under the glare of the law, with serious allegations of sexual battery hanging over his head. Basil Farrington, 47, was arrested yesterday in Lauderdale Lakes, according to NBC Miami. Farrington faces six counts of sexual battery by a person in familial or custodial authority on a victim aged between 12 and under 18.
The accusations that date back to 2011 concern at least four instances where Farrington allegedly preyed on one of his students during his tenure at the high school. While the arrest warrant detailed the time frame of the alleged incidents between 2011 and 2014, there was no explanation proffered as to the delay in bringing charges against him, as noted by NBC Miami. Farrington’s educational career at Boyd Anderson stretched from 2000 to 2015, after which he took up a position at the Whiddon-Rogers Education Center in Fort Lauderdale until 2020.
Recently, Farrington has been working as a grant facilitator, a role that did not involve direct interactions with students, per statements by Broward County Public Schools officials. He's now been reassigned pending the case's outcome, detailed further by CBS News Miami. Appearing in bond court today, the former teacher faced prosecutors' demands for him to be held without bond. However, his defense attorney cited his lack of prior criminal history and requested that bond be set.
Ultimately, the judge settled on a $150,000 bond and stipulated that if Farrington does post bond, he must be monitored by GPS. Furthermore, he is forbidden from having any contact with minors and cannot set foot on any Broward school district property. This measure ensures some level of accountability and oversight whilst the legal proceedings unfold, captured in reports by NBC Miami.
