A woman in Fort Pierce found herself entangled with the law after a sting operation unveiled her part in a car wrap scam sprawling across multiple states. According to CBS12, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office nabbed 63-year-old Aleda Jaynell Caldwell on charges including grand theft and money laundering related to a fraudulent scheme involving counterfeit checks and money orders.
The operation, discovered by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office’s Financial Crimes Unit, operated via unexpected text messages promising potential victims payment for adorning their vehicles with advertising decals. "Victims receive unsolicited texts offering cash to wrap their cars in promotional decals," CBS12 reported. Participants were duped into depositing fake checks and then instructed to wire the bulk of the cash under the guise that it was going to a supposed decal installer. The SCAM left individuals with significant deficits when banks subsequently flagged the transactions as fraudulent.
After executing a search warrant at an address near 1900 Jaynell Street, law enforcement apprehended Caldwell, who was allegedly involved in retrieving a suspicious package containing a sham money order. As stated by WPBF, she is facing multiple charges and already had active warrants from Georgia for similar allegations.
With the rise of digital scams, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office has issued a stark reminder for residents to be cautious of such deceptive practices. They encourage the public to stay alert and report any suspicious messages that resemble the qualities of this scheme.
