Greenfield residents and visitors are advised of a significant street closure today due to the Hancock Flat 50 bicycle ride and race. According to a social media post from the Greenfield Police Department, North Street will be off-limits for traffic between Pennsylvania and State Streets in order to accommodate the cycling event.
The event, which starts at 8 a.m. and has a finish line cut off at 1 p.m., is expected to host about 1,400 riders. Participants will kick off the race at the intersection of Pennsylvania and North Streets before heading eastbound on Main Street towards Jaycie Phelps Road. Motorists should exercise caution as riders make their way through a large portion of eastern and southern Hancock County, winding through scenic routes and returning to Greenfield on Franklin Street at the end of the race. As the cyclists re-enter the city, they will move North on Franklin from Davis Road towards North Street, subsequently heading east back to the starting point on Pennsylvania.
The impact on local traffic will be most evident downtown and in the areas to the east and south of the county. The Hancock Flat 50 is not just a test of endurance and speed for the cycling community, but also a momentary reconfiguration of everyday life for residents. The Greenfield Police Department encourages "drivers in the downtown area and the eastern and southern portions of the county" to be extra cautious today.
With road closures such as this, planning ahead for any travel within the city is essential. Alternative routes should be considered to avoid delays. For those interested in supporting the riders, the starting line at Pennsylvania and North Streets might be an ideal spot to cheer them on, provided they arrive before the roads are closed.
