Gwinnett County is forging ahead with several transportation infrastructure upgrades to alleviate congestion and enhance safety along its bustling routes. Recently, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners greenlit contracts and agreements aiming to expand roads, replace an aging bridge, and augment intersections. This push is a part of the ongoing effort to update and refine the county's transportation network to better serve its growing population.
During the Board's meeting last Tuesday, multiple initiatives received the nod, including those linked to the Stanley Road at Winder Highway project. This particular undertaking, which is aligned with the Georgia Department of Transportation's vision of transforming State Route 316 into a freeway, involves the relocation of Stanley Road and the addition of dedicated turn lanes at the intersection. An agreement establishing the partnership with GDOT for the construction phase was approved alongside the awarding of a $5.1 million construction contract to ER Snell Contractor, Inc. According to a Gwinnett County announcement, these efforts are funded jointly by GDOT and the 2017 SPLOST program.
Another vital part of the transport strategy is the replacement of the Drowning Creek Road bridge over Drowning Creek. With origins dating back to 1964, the existing structure is due for an update. Georgia Bridge and Concrete, LLC has been tasked with both the engineering and construction for the new bridge, with funds designated from the 2023 SPLOST program.
Moreover, major intersection improvements are slated for Steve Reynolds Boulevard which include additional lanes and turn upgrades at several junctures along the corridor. The construction contract for these upgrades, totaling $1 million, was awarded to Azimuth Contractors, LLC, as outlined in the county's press release. All these intersection enhancements form part of the comprehensive plan to improve mobility and will be funded through 2023 SPLOST program resources.
