A blaze took hold of a Miami residence's two-story detached garage early this morning, alarming the community and prompting a swift response from the fire department. The living quarters located above the garage were heavily involved, with flames and smoke observed upon the firefighters' arrival.
Authorities received notification of the incident at 10:21 a.m. on Southwest 17th Road, a stone's throw from South Miami Avenue, as per reports from Local 10 News. "On arrival, crews found a two-story detached garage with a living quarter upstairs with heavy smoke and flames emitting," a statement from the Miami Department of Fire-Rescue news release detailed the situation. As the severity of the fire became evident, additional resources were marshalled, including a Hazardous Materials Team to contend with a potentially volatile situation caused by a fuel spill.
At the forefront of the firefighters' priorities was the safety of inhabitants—efforts that were confirmed successful when the resident of the upstairs apartment was accounted for, having escaped unharmed. WSVN shared that crews worked rapidly to evacuate the living quarters, and the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes of the first responders' engagement.
Complications arose on the first floor where a vehicle began spilling fuel, igniting and necessitating a foam operation to manage the flames, "The first floor had a vehicle that was spilling fuel and igniting which required a foam operation to contain and extinguish," the Local 10 News release elaborated. Fire crews successfully contained the blaze, protecting nearby structures and preventing any casualties.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
