A Miami police officer, Guillermo Arteaga, was at the center of a recent legal mix-up after he faced charges for a littering incident from over two years ago. According to WSVN, the Broward State Attorney's Office has dropped the charges against Arteaga, a decision that comes after a notable arrest earlier this week.
Back in April 2020, Arteaga, now 35, was issued a citation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for illegally dumping trash near Pembroke Road. Refusing to let the incident pass as a simple mistake, the commission offered him the option to either pay a $25 fine or appear in court which, Arteaga chose to settle by paying the fine and presenting himself before the court in November 2020. However due to procedural delays largely prompted by the pandemic, his case was inadvertently resurrected by the State Attorney’s Office in 2023—resulting in Arteaga's arrest on Tuesday.
The arrest was brief, with Arteaga booking into the Broward County Jail before being released. In a turn of events, the State Attorney’s Office acknowledged the oversight and dropped the charge after the defense reached out to the prosecutors. In a further conciliatory gesture, prosecutors offered an apology to Arteaga and State Attorney Harold Pryor extended an invitation for a personal meeting, suggesting a recognition of the unusual nature of Arteaga's predicament.
In a separate report by Hoodline, it detailed the suspension of Arteaga by the Miami Police Department following his failure to attend a court hearing in June 2023. The citation titled over a minor charge of littering below 15 pounds or 27 cubic feet, accompanied by a $105 fine, escalated. Following Arteaga's neglect to appear for his mandated court date, a judge ordered his arrest and the Miami Police Department enacted an immediate suspension.
