The Coconut Grove was pierced by gunshots yesterday evening, leaving the community reeling after a fatal encounter on Douglas Road. According to NBC Miami, a man succumbed to his injuries following a shooting just north of Grand Avenue before 6:30 p.m. Miami Police are actively searching for the assailant, who remains at large.
Responding to the sound of gunfire detected by ShotSpotter, police converged on the 3300 block of SW 37th Avenue, where they discovered two victims, one of whom later died at Jackson Memorial Hospital. No arrests as of yet have been reported, CBS News Miami reported. The deceased's identity has not been revealed to the public.
Witnesses in the neighborhood expressed shock and sorrow. "It's surprising to see, I mean. But it's unfortunate to say it's kind of like a frequent thing nowadays around this area, as someone that lives around here," a local resident told NBC Miami. Talking about the familiar violence etching its narrative into the vibrant tapestry of Coconut Grove, he added, "And disheartening, I mean, to say the least... It's a vibrant community. There's a lot of families here and stuff, and hopefully it's something that changes in the future."
Along with seeking the gunman, authorities are keen on unravelling the sequence of events that led to the mortal altercation, with CBS News Miami reporting that another individual was injured in the encounter but refused to seek hospital treatment. While detectives work on identifying the suspect, community members are urged to come forward with any information.
