A man was fatally shot in Coconut Grove on Wednesday evening. As reported by NBC Miami, the incident occurred near Southwest 37th Avenue and Southwest 33rd Street soon before 6 p.m. The victim, later identified as 30-year-old Robert Denardes Whittle Jr., was swiftly transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital but unfortunately did not survive.
Miami Police are presently offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the gunman. In a quest to quickly apprehend the suspect, authorities are asking for the public's help. It seems that another man was injured during the incident but chose not to seek hospital treatment. The sound of the gunfire was picked up by ShotSpotter, which facilitated the police's rapid response to the scene, according to details provided by Hoodline.
A local resident conveyed to NBC Miami their alarm at the frequency of such violence in the area, saying, "It's surprising to see, I mean. But it's unfortunate to say it's kind of like a frequent thing nowadays around this area, as someone that lives around here. And disheartening, I mean, to say the least... it's a vibrant community. There's a lot of families here and stuff, and hopefully it's something that changes in the future."
The search for the suspect continues as law enforcement works to unravel the sequence leading up to the fatal confrontation. No immediate arrests have been reported, with officers piecing together evidence. As the investigation continues, Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers is actively seeking tips. Witnesses or those with potentially relevant information are being encouraged to come forward. They are asked to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS, as per a statement obtained from NBC Miami.
