A New Orleans man, aged 22, entered a guilty plea on charges relating to drug trafficking and firearm offenses. The conviction encompasses his involvement in a conspiracy to possess firearms in the advancement of drug trafficking, possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances including tapentadol, tramadol, and marijuana, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, according to an announcement by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Detailing the events leading to the charges, court documents revealed that the individual, identified as Johnson, was apprehended on September 1, 2023, in a stolen vehicle in Joe Brown Park with a Glock Model 23 firearm and illegal drugs. Though he was released on bond, by March 2024, Johnson was once again spotted operating another stolen car, leading eventually to a search warrant execution at his home, where authorities found additional firearms, drugs, and burglary tools.
The penalties for these convictions are severe, with potential incarceration for up to 20 years, fines reaching $1,000,000 for drug distribution charges, and additional penalties for the firearms offenses. Specifically, for the charge of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, Johnson faces a mandatory minimum of five years that could extend to a life sentence, which would be served subsequent to any other sentences received.
The case is part of the broader Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime and improving neighborhood security through a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and community organizations. This intensified strategy launched by the Department of Justice in May 2021, pledges to foster trust within communities, support violence prevention, focus on strategic enforcement priorities, and measure the outcomes of these efforts.
With the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department leading the investigative efforts, Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is attributed with handling the prosecution of this case.
