A recent incident aboard Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas has left one passenger injured after a water slide malfunctioned. NBC Miami reports that acrylic glass broke off from the slide as a guest was passing through, prompting immediate medical attention from the ship's crew. The specifics of the injuries have not been disclosed, but the passenger is reportedly in stable condition.
The aftermath of the incident was captured on video by a fellow passenger, Jim Muldoon, who recorded water gushing from the broken slide into a public area, with screams and calls to "Stop the slide" audible in the chaos. CBS News Miami shared the clip, alongside a statement from a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, "Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation."
The Icon of the Seas was already in the news prior to this occurrence, due to a tragic and violent event on July 24 involving two crew members. A 35-year-old South African crew member attacked and stabbed a female colleague multiple times before jumping overboard, ultimately resulting in his death. Royal Caribbean has described the incident as "a personal dispute" and confirmed that the woman was treated for her injuries and is in stable condition, as per the CBS News Miami report.
The Icon of the Seas is currently on a voyage that began last Saturday, with scheduled stops including the Netherland Antilles, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas, according to NBC Miami. The ship is set to return to PortMiami tomorrow, after which it will embark on another cruise. Meanwhile, the Royal Bahamas Police Force is involved with the investigation surrounding the altercation between the crew members, the cruise line has confirmed.
