The I-10 Deck Park Tunnel in Phoenix commemorated its 35th anniversary this past weekend, celebrated as a key piece of the region's infrastructure and growth. According to an interview with FOX 10, Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) spokesperson Doug Nintzel reflected on the tunnel's significance, citing its role in the Valley's development and the completion of a national transportation milestone. The tunnel not only allowed I-10 to seamlessly stretch from coast to coast but also facilitated key developments throughout the region.

In addition to celebrating the tunnel's anniversary, there are plans to further improve safety along the I-10 corridor. A study from the Maricopa Association of Governments noted an average of five crashes daily within a five-mile stretch of the corridor, as reported by ABC15. Bradlee Williams, the I-10 corridor study manager, emphasized the need to implement changes to reduce bottlenecks and enhance safety. Currently, an environmental impact study is looking into potential improvements to address these issues.

The Deck Park Tunnel, initially opened on August 10, 1990, was constructed as a solution to avoid an elevated freeway system, which was opposed by many residents. Comprising 19 side-by-side bridges, it created not only the passage for I-10 underneath but also the foundation for the important urban green space of Margaret T. Hance Park above it. The tunnel's design was instrumental in connecting Santa Monica, California to Jacksonville, Florida, by closing the final mile of the interstate.

Recent upgrades to the tunnel include a transition to LED lighting aimed at improving driver visibility. The tunnel has also been renamed to honor Dean Lindsey, a late ADOT engineer who played a crucial role in its construction and securing funding. This dedication to Lindsey was highlighted in a statement obtained by ABC15. Until further safety enhancements are completed, ADOT recommends avoiding speeding and distracted driving as some of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of crashes in the tunnel and surrounding roads.
