Portland's efforts to address homelessness have taken a step forward with the city revealing new collaborations aimed at increasing the availability of day centers, environments that offer essential services and a measure of reprieve for those living without homes. As reported on the official City of Portland's website, the initiative focuses on providing daytime access to resources such as health, housing, and employment services, thus complementing the city's already established overnight shelters.
The first of these partnerships is set to bring to life the NW Glisan Oasis Day Center, an outdoor space conceived to give the community not just a place to rest but also to connect to critical support networks. This innovative approach, in collaboration with Urban Alchemy, aims to actively engage with the city's vulnerable populace and help guide them towards their next steps. Mayor Keith Wilson shed light on the importance of such spaces, stating, "Everyone should feel like they have a place they belong. Overnight shelters provide a safe place to sleep, but we know our neighbors need more – they need a place to find refuge, connect to services, and plan their next steps. The Oasis model has worked in other cities, and I’m excited to bring that same promise and innovation to Portland."
Understanding the gravity of this need, JOIN has teamed up with the city to enlarge its day center's operational hours at the location on the corner of 81st Avenue and NE Halsey. The move will allow for a greater number of individuals to benefit from the services provided, creating a seamless transition between the shelter they find at night and the support they receive during the day.
According to the City of Portland's announcement, Dr. Lena Miller of Urban Alchemy highlighted the influence of such partnerships, saying, "Our Oasis model provides guests with the resources, empathy, and trauma-informed care they need, while restoring dignity and calm to local neighborhoods." Similarly, Monta Knudson of JOIN emphasized the significance of these expansions in providing a continuum of care that significantly enhances safety, dignity, and access to imperative resources.
Moving forward with compassion and innovation, the City of Portland has affirmed its commitment to not only increasing support but also ensuring that the environments they create are not merely operational but truly nurturing, enhancing the potential for those they serve to find a firmer footing in their quest towards stability.
