Seven officers from the Florida Department of Corrections have been charged following an investigation into the alleged beating of an inmate, Miami-Dade records reveal. This incident purportedly took place on April 5 at the Dade Correctional Institution. According to arrest warrants reported by Local 10 News, Lt. Shentrica Clark, 40, initiated the escort of inmate Christopher Castro to her office before the altercation.
In a sequence of events, Castro found himself handcuffed and subsequently assaulted by several officers. Following the attack, reports indicate that Castro was denied medical attention. Witnesses later attested to Castro's visible injuries, which contradicted subsequent reports by Clark to her superiors, stating that Castro was seeking medical attention for a headache after a supposed attempt to stab another corrections officer. A later inspection by another lieutenant exposed serious injuries that Clark allegedly dismissed, claiming Castro only had a "little knot" on his head, as described by NBC Miami's coverage of the event.
Several of the officers involved, including Clark, now face charges ranging from tampering with physical evidence to failure to report known or suspected unlawful abuse, and use of force or battery on a detainee. In a collected blood spatter and a smear, the investigation revealed an apparent attempt to clean the cell, adding to the evidence against the officers. A statement released by a spokesperson for the FDOC confirmed that all staff members involved were dismissed "as quickly as administratively possible," as detailed by Local10.
The officers, identified in the warrants as Clark, Capt. Jochen Anglin, Officer Jordy Calero, Sgt. Travon Norman, Sgt. D’Andre Hill, Sgt. Richard Jackson, and Sgt. Freddie Morgan, are now awaiting their fate in the legal system. Local circuit judges are presiding over their cases with the most recent developments including bond postings and refusals to comment after release, as detailed by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies and statements shared with Local 10 News.
