Following a series of assaults along the Monon Trail this month, IMPD Sex Crimes detectives have apprehended 27-year-old Larry Duerson, who is believed to be linked to the attacks. According to a social media post from IMPD News, the first incident was reported on August 8, when a woman was attacked earlier that morning and sustained multiple injuries before Good Samaritans intervened. A similar attempt occurred on August 14, prompting detectives to believe the two incidents were connected.

Investigative work by the detectives, coupled with forensic evidence provided by the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, helped in identifying Duerson as the suspect. "These were violent and senseless attacks on community members who were simply enjoying the Monon Trail," said Chief Chris Bailey. In a statement obtained by IMPD News, he expressed gratitude for "the courage of the victims and the Good Samaritans who came forward." The quick identification and arrest of the suspect were credited to the efforts of law enforcement and community members alike.

Duerson was apprehended by the IMPD-FBI Violent Crime Task Force detectives yesterday, and is facing preliminary felony charges of kidnapping, attempted rape, and strangulation. According to details released, Sex Crimes detectives are continuing to investigate and additional charges could be forthcoming based on ongoing forensic evidence review. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will ultimately make the final charging decisions.

Chief Bailey's emphasis on community strength was echoed in the IMPD release, which stated, "Their bravery, together with the commitment of our officers, demonstrates the strength of our community and our shared commitment to keep our public spaces safe." While Duerson has been arrested, it is important to note that a charge and an arrest are merely accusations. As outlined by IMPD News, he should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
