According to a press release from the San Diego Police Department, the incident occurred on Wednesday at around 4:01 PM on the 8600 block of Production Avenue. The victim was seated in the front passenger side of a parked vehicle when he was shot. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by responding officers and paramedics, Vega was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Following the shooting, the suspect, described as a white male in his 40s wearing a black shirt and dark-colored shorts, fled the scene on foot heading northbound. A search was conducted in the area, including a check on a nearby RV that might have been connected to the suspect. Nonetheless, the initial manhunt did not lead to an arrest on the day of the crime. In a development since the shooting, a 42-year-old white male named Joseph Hendry has been arrested in connection with Vega's murder, the San Diego Police Department confirmed in their release.

The San Diego Police Department's Homicide unit is actively investigating the circumstances around Vega's death. They are piecing together witness statements and examining potential leads.
