A 5-year-old boy was hospitalized this morning after being hit by a car near a Port St. Lucie school, officials say. The incident occurred around 8:09 a.m. near Oak Hammock K-8 School, as the child was riding his bicycle, according to WPBF. Port St. Lucie police report that the boy was traveling west on the sidewalk and, proceeded onto the crosswalk of the bus loop on Southwest California Boulevard.

An adult male was driving a black Mercedes eastbound when he turned left into the bus loop and collided with the boy. The police stated that the driver's view of the child was obstructed by westbound traffic, which led to the collision. Despite the nature of the incident, the child sustained only minor injuries and received prompt medical attention at a local hospital, CBS12 News reported.

The driver of the Mercedes was not injured in the event. As for the young boy, his condition has allowed for treatment on a non-life-threatening basis. The incident marks yet another in a disturbing pattern of pedestrian accidents in the area, coming less than a month after an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured while trying to cross the street to reach her bus stop in the same vicinity.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. In light of this and previous events, there has been no immediate word on any pending charges or changes to traffic patterns near the school, to bolster the safety of the children in the area.
