
In a grievous incident that occurred on the morning of September 16, a child was killed in a vehicular accident in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. The Louisiana State Police Troop L reported responding to a crash on LA Hwy 40, just east of Hurd Road, which tragically resulted in the death of an 8-year-old Jewel Leger from Covington, according to a statement obtained by the Louisiana State Police.
The investigation revealed that a 2009 Toyota Camry, operated by an adult who was properly restrained, veered off the road and struck a tree while navigating a left-hand curve. The driver sustained moderate injuries, however, Jewel Leger who was seated in the front passenger seat, and unrestrained, suffered fatal injuries that led to her being pronounced deceased at the scene. In their ongoing investigation, troopers have taken a routine toxicology sample from the driver for analysis, as reported by the Louisiana State Police.
As the law enforcement officials delve further into the circumstances surrounding the accident, the need for traffic safety, particularly the correct use of restraints, has been highlighted through this unfortunate event. According to the Louisiana State Police, the correct usage of safety restraints substantially reduces the chance of incurring serious injury or death during an accident. They also stress that state law requires all passengers to be properly restrained, and children under the age of thirteen should preferably be seated in the rear seat, in proper restraint systems.
The police are also offering support for parents and caregivers who are unsure about car seat installation. They are urged to reach out to the Louisiana State Police Troop stations or contact the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for help, with the capsized hope that further tragedies can be prevented. Troopers also caution all drivers to avoid impairment, distractions, and to assure all passengers are securely fastened within the vehicle.
