Residents in central Indiana should be aware of an elevated fire weather threat this week as minimum relative humidity values drop during the afternoons. Monday’s forecast calls for sunny skies with highs in the upper 80s and east winds at 3 to 6 mph, creating dry conditions that increase fire risk, according to the National Weather Service Indianapolis (NWS).
Clear skies will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Weather Service reports that minimum relative humidity values will fall into the 25 to 35 percent range most afternoons, combined with recent lack of rainfall, sustaining an elevated fire weather threat. Nighttime lows will dip into the low 60s, offering cooler temperatures but little moisture recovery.
Sunny days and mostly clear nights are expected through Friday with continued low humidity values of 25 to 35 percent most afternoons, maintaining the elevated fire weather threat. Thunderstorms may develop over the weekend, with a 30 percent chance of showers and scattered thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, potentially bringing some precipitation.
The National Weather Service advises staying alert to fire weather conditions and following local restrictions and advisories to help prevent fire ignitions. Spotters remain on standby as conditions evolve.
