This weekend, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is transforming into a miniature Caribbean paradise with its "Taste of the Caribbean" festival. In its second year, this festival, spicing up Coral Gables with a dash of island zest, is a celebration of Caribbean culture, from the culinary arts to the lively tunes and dances that characterize this vibrant region. As Local 10 reported, Fairchild’s General Manager Robert Soto expressed, “Because we showcase tropical plants and fruits, was to celebrate the regions that produce a lot of that. The best way for us to do that was to do a celebration of the Caribbean.”
Slated for tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the festival promises a panoply of flavors with dishes such as Jamaican beef patties and jerk conch, not to mention a mango mojito among other signature drinks. “We are excited to showcase many cultures and islands of the Caribbean at our festival. And they’re going to be doing that in many different ways,” Soto said in a statement obtained by Local 10. An island marketplace will also feature handmade wares from different islands, showing off more than just the edible contributions of the Caribbean.
Now, no Caribbean fête would be complete without the rhythm and soul of its music. A lineup of Junkanoo, reggae, mento, and calypso will reverberate throughout the garden’s open-air spaces, promising guests an immersive experience. For those in the mood to get their groove on, soca dance lessons will be provided, as described in Gables Gazette.
Rick Albury from Junkanoo Riddims Entertainment invited everyone to get a "taste of Bahamian Junkanoo" and explained, "We use it as a celebration of freedom, just a celebration of life. If you want to let go, release the stress of everyday living, you can do Junkanoo with us," as noted by Local 10.
Moving beyond entertainment, Fairchild has also concocted an educational slant to the festivities. The "Exploring the Tropics" session, led by Nick Bernal of Seasons Farm Fresh, will offer insights into tropical fruits. Meanwhile, the "Array of Spice Demo" will dive into the herbs and seasonings central to Caribbean cuisine. Island flavors will permeate the air, with stalls like Jerk Conch and Bahama Mama serving up tasty eats, as reported by the Gables Gazette. For those looking to sip on something special, the Tropical Tasting Tavern will be providing pairings of Caribbean-inspired cocktails and small plates at scheduled seatings.
For information on tickets and a full rundown of activities, those interested can check out Fairchild’s official website. Pricing for the event is set at $24.95 for adults and $11.95 for children, while Fairchild members enjoy free admission.
