An investigation is underway in Cumberland, Indiana, after a man was found with a gunshot wound to his head in the early hours of Friday last week. According to the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department Facebook post, officers were called to the 11300 block of Tuck Court shortly before 4:30 a.m. Upon arrival, police found an adult male victim who received first aid and was transported to an Indianapolis hospital, where he remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Investigators are working to determine the events leading up to the shooting. The leaseholder involved in the incident cooperated with officers at the scene. The victim, identified as an unhoused individual, was reportedly causing a disturbance before the incident escalated. He allegedly attempted to forcefully enter the leaseholder’s residence after being asked to leave. The leaseholder, legally in possession of a firearm, discharged a single round to stop the intrusion and then called 911 for assistance, the post stated.
The leaseholder’s account and evidence collected at the scene are part of the ongoing investigation. Once completed, Cumberland investigators will present the case to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for review. The identity of the victim has not been released, and his condition remains critical.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department or CrimeStoppers of Indiana. The CMPD Public Information Office can also be reached for additional inquiries regarding this case.
