In a tragic turn of events, a fatal collision occurred on Clinton St at E. Baker Street, right in front of the U.S. Post Office. The incident, which unfolded at approximately 5:48 pm, involved a male adult in a wheelchair. Fort Wayne Police Department officers promptly arrived at the scene, discovering the critical state of the wheelchair-bound victim and immediately commenced life-saving efforts. Unfortunately, despite the swift response, the victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The Fort Wayne Police Department has actively begun to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The driver involved in the incident has been cooperative with investigators, according to the City of Fort Wayne's official report from the department. It has been acknowledged that heavy rain was present during the time of the accident and the wheelchair was in the process of crossing Clinton when the collision occurred. The FWPD's Fatal Accident Crash Team alongside the Air Support Unit are in the process to slowly gather potential video evidence to better elucidate the sequence of events leading to the tragic outcome.
The aftermath of the accident saw Clinton Street completely shut down for nearly two hours as law enforcement and emergency teams worked the scene. The roadway has been reopened since. However, this case remains very much active as further investigation is being carried out by the FWPD Fatal Accident Crash Team, Air Support Unit, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
Police are urging anyone with information on this incident to come forward as each piece of evidence could be vital. Sergeant John Nichter, serving as the Public Information Officer, provided the initial information and reaffirmed the ongoing status of the investigation.
