The Fort Wayne Police Department is set to enhance the Safety Village with a $50,000 grant from AWS Foundation, aimed at boosting the inclusivity of its facilities. According to a recent announcement the City of Fort Wayne, the grant will fund various accessibility improvements, including adaptive playground equipment and sensory-friendly spaces, designed to cater to all children, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.
Specifically, the grant will be directed towards the purchase and installation of adaptive playground fittings, audible voice crosswalks to assist visually impaired visitors, and not one but two battery-operated cars — including a wheelchair-accessible model. The initiative underscores an effort to increase playground usage and foster better social integration among children. "A field trip to Safety Village is a beloved memory for most of Allen County’s youth," AWS Foundation CEO Patti Hays is quoted saying in the official statement by the City of Fort Wayne. "These improvements will ensure that no student is left back in the classroom due to lack of accessibility and sensory accommodations."
