A tense situation developed on Kitch Street today, where Fort Wayne Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence concerning an armed individual in the throes of a mental health crisis. According to the City of Fort Wayne, the skirmish, which unfolded in the 1400 block, led to a broad response from the police, including specialized tactical support and an alert to local citizens.
The standard de-escalation tactics initially employed by the on-scene officers hit a wall, and additional units, including the Emergency Services Team (EST), Crisis Response Team (CRT), and the Ariel Support Unit (ASU), swooped in to manage the situation. Ensuring public safety, the FWPD proactively distributed an IPAWS alert through the cellular network, instructing locals to avoid the area, an effort to curb any unforeseen escalation.
After tense hours of negotiation and strategy, the confrontation reached a conclusion just shy of 7:00 pm, when the EST succeeded in apprehending the subject without any ensuing injuries. The individual is slated for transport to a nearby hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation, according to a statement from Sgt. Jonathan Cutler, the Public Information Officer.
