Fulton County schools are seeing a considerable influx of cash dedicated to bolstering safety. In a notable drive to prioritize the well-being of students and staff, the state has dispensed over $83,000 to local schools in the region. This financial boost comes courtesy of the state's Secured School Safety Grant Program, an initiative State Rep. Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) has fervently supported.
The funds are a slice of a hefty $27 million investment that the legislature has committed to school safety this year, benefitting a grand total of 494 schools statewide. According to information obtained by Indiana House Republicans, legislative efforts have also been made to streamline these safety initiatives by moving the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security's wing. This strategic move is aimed to standardize and better coordinate the measures taken to safeguard schools across the state.
Sharing his thoughts on the importance of school safety, Jordan said, "School security is more than just installing cameras and upgrading locks and windows. It's creating a culture of safety where students and staff feel protected." He believes these grants symbolize a step towards realizing a secure environment conducive for education.
Details reveal that Caston School Corp. has been allocated $37,000, while Rochester Community School Corp. is set to receive $46,250. The grant allows for a versatile utilization of the funds, encompassing various requirements such as resourcing officers, acquiring new equipment and technology, implementing active event warning systems, conducting threat assessments, and even developing student-parent support service programs. This flexible approach ensures that schools can tailor the funds to meet their distinctive needs.
With this being part of an ongoing commitment since 2013, Indiana’s dedication to school safety is evident by the more than $214 million that has been channeled into the cause through state matching grants.
