Gibson County schools are on the receiving end of a substantial state grant aimed at bolstering safety and security. More than $326,000 is being funneled into local educational institutions through the state's Secured School Safety Grant Program, a move lauded by State Reps. Cindy Ledbetter (Newburgh) and Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka).
In describing the grants, Ledbetter highlighted the legislature's broader commitment by saying, "Schools receiving these grants will use the funds to improve security on their campuses," in a statement obtained by Indiana House Republicans, this action is part of a sweeping $27 million investment spanning 494 schools throughout the state, and with the recent push of legislation centralizing the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security, its clear state officials are actively funneling resources toward safeguarding youth education.
The list of schools benefiting from the grant includes East Gibson School Corp., which snagged a hefty $92,500, Holy Cross School in Fort Branch with $32,375, and others ranging from North Gibson School Corp. to St. Joseph School in Princeton. Each one is earmarked for various improvements like hiring resource officers, updating equipment and technology, or making threat assessments; in essence, bolstering an infrastructure designed to shield the learning environment from hazards that have no place in the sanctuary of education.
Furthering the discussion, Hostettler detailed the versatility of the awarded funds, "Teachers and students should feel protected at school, which leads to better education outcomes," Hostettler told Indiana House Republicans, adding that "These grants give schools financial backing to upgrade security systems or hire resource officers" thus drawing a direct correlation between the sense of security and the quality of education, the grants appear to be a vehicle of assurance, meant to encircle the educational arena with a layer of certainty.
Indiana has shown a consistent pattern of investing in school safety, with over $214 million put into this area since the inception of the Secured School Safety Grant Program in 2013.
