Students eyeing a foray into the legislative process have a shot through the Indiana House Republicans' internship program for the 2026 session. State Rep. Beau Baird, from Greencastle, announced the call for applications, which targets college students, graduates, and those in the advanced throes of higher education. It's not just a symbolic gesture, but a full-time job from January until March.
"This opportunity helps prepare the next generation of leaders for careers in public service and beyond," Baird said, with a focus on practical state government experience. Interns can expect a vibrant spell inside the Statehouse, situated in the bustling heart of downtown Indianapolis, from Monday to Friday. The internship covers an array of fields, including legislative operations, policy, and communications, promising a comprehensive view of the gears that turn within the political machine.
According to Indiana House Republicans' announcement, each intern will shadow staff members and be teamed up with a group of state representatives. Amidst the legislative bustle, the program also works to forge connections with state agencies, and the private sector, providing interns a foundation that spans beyond the governmental landscape.
The internship comes with an educational perk, a weekly speaker series that invites Indiana's civic leaders to impart wisdom and perspectives on the ins and outs of public service. Baird highlighted the interactive nature of the internship, which is designed not just to observe but also to engage with the political process, offering a hands-on approach that could shape the careers of its participants.
