Indiana State Rep. Maureen Bauer of South Bend was targeted in a “sextortion” crime involving a digitally manipulated photo created without her consent. The image, intended to harass, has led to a criminal investigation, WTHR reported.
According to FOX59, a caucus spokesperson stated that under Indiana law it is illegal to create or share such images, even if they are AI-generated. Former FBI special agent Doug Kouns also emphasized the illegality of the act.
Bauer has reported the incident to the Indiana State Police and the FBI. She is also working with platforms and legal channels to have the content removed and to identify the individuals responsible. The manipulated images have been taken down, but the investigation remains ongoing, IndyStar reported.
