The tragic stabbing death of 17-year-old Dominic Ferrell at the Icon Brickell has taken another distressing turn as Jonathan Ferrell, the victim’s father, has been arrested for alleged violations of a domestic violence injunction. Local 10 reports that the 50-year-old was prohibited from contacting his estranged wife and their four kids after being served an injunction on May 20, a restrictions that expired two days after his son’s death on June 8.
Despite the clear orders of the injunction, Ferrell allegedly maintained contact with his children within the prohibited timeframe. In an arrest report obtained by Local 10, one incident involved Ferrell sending photographs and messages to a family member on May 23. In one message, he expressed his love and regret, stating, “My Baba - I know this text will put me in jail if mom reports it but I need you to know how much I love you and (I) don’t know it matters much anymore. I didn’t realize I was doing a poor job. I regret not connecting with (you) over how you felt. I’ve decided not to participate in the custody proceedings. It’s not worth subjecting you and your brothers to the process. I just want you and your brothers to know I love you. Here’s some pictures. Please reflect on the good times when you think of our family. There were a lot. Please be safe out there in Miami. I won’t be around to enforce the guardrails :).” This communication was among the evidence that led to charges being filed against him.
The police details further revealed that Ferrell had made physical contact with his children and even asked his son, using the initials D.F. in police reports, to meet him due to his alleged suicidal thoughts. Tragically, D.F., which stands for Dominic Ferrell, was the teen later murdered in his own home. Dominic Ferrell had been a student at Miami Beach Senior High, and his loss has undoubtedly left a significant void in the school community and among family members.
The suspect in Dominic's killing, Kyrill R. Kehl, managed to gain entry into the Ferrells’ unlocked residential unit and fatally attacked Dominic as he slept. Surveillance footage captured Kehl fleeing the crime scene before he was found dead at a nearby construction site. In a statement released through his lawyer, obtained by Local 10, Jonathan Ferrell denied any accusations of domestic violence and has been quoted as saying, “I lost my son, my best friend, and I relive it every night. I’m living a nightmare that keeps getting worse. These charges are absurd and unjust. All I want is to grieve and be a father to my children without being dragged through baseless accusations.” He reiterated his desire to grieve and be a father to his surviving children.
As this story develops, the Ferrell family continues to navigate through an extended period of grief and legal complications. Jonathan Ferrell’s attorney has signaled intentions to hold a news conference later this week, as reported by NBC Miami. Further updates are expected as both the family and the legal system seek to untangle the complex layers of this tragic situation.
