A person was critically injured after being struck by a train last night in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. According to the Miami Police Department, the incident happened near Northwest First Avenue and 14th Street, NBC Miami reported. Emergency responders took the individual to the hospital for treatment.
The person’s identity has not been released, and the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. Data from the Federal Railroad Administration shows that Miami recorded four train crashes this year, compared to 11 the previous year.
Local resident Andrae Nelson told NBC Miami it is concerning that such incidents continue to happen and stressed caution around train tracks.
Initial reports identified the train as a Brightline, but Miami Fire Rescue’s Lt. Pete Sanchez told Local 10 it was a South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) train. Officials urged people to avoid the area while the investigation continued.
Miami Fire Rescue said the victim was a cyclist who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. SFRTA/Tri-Rail Public Safety provides safety tips online for people near train tracks.
