Yesterday evening, a Miami Beach hostel became the scene of an urgent evacuation after a fire broke out on its second floor. The Miami Beach Fire Department swiftly responded to the emergency at 236 9th Street and contained the flames, ensuring they did not spread beyond the affected area. Despite the outbreak, no injuries were reported, as stated by the fire department.
Guests at the hostel faced a sudden upheaval from their accommodation, as the building became unsafe for occupancy. An estimated 98 individuals were affected by the incident, as reported by the American Red Cross, which assisted in coordinating emergency aid for those impacted. Details on the extent of the damage remain forthcoming, with investigators currently probing into the fire's origin, according to information from NBC Miami.
7News captured footage from the scene, showing charred facades and large flames emitting from the hostel's windows before being extinguished by firefighters. Guests recounted the chaos as they were jolted awake and forced to evacuate the building. “There was a fire in the building, on the second floor. Everybody in the hostel had to be evacuated. They knocked out all the windows here. I was asleep in the room on the second floor when my roommate came in and woke me up, was like ‘There’s a fire.'” John Sheppard told 7News. He depicted the subsequent moments as enveloped in smoke and disarray.
For many, the displacement caused significant distress. Former hostel employee Willa Castaneda shared her concerns with 7News, "It was 100 people inside and everybody was running outside. Horrible, you know, my boss is really sad too." As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the Red Cross has stepped in to provide assistance with lodging for the evacuated guests for the immediate future. Meanwhile, the Miami Beach hostel's management team is likely grappling with not just the physical damage to the property, but also the emotional and logistical ramifications following the displacement of their guests.
