Port St. Lucie Police have recently made several arrests under the new Super Speeder statute and other infractions, keeping them particularly busy over the past weekend. Tarick Zein, 30, of Palm Bay became the first individual to be arrested under the new law after being clocked at 90 mph in a 40 mph zone on SW Airoso Blvd., and additionally charged with DUI. According to CBS12, Master Sgt. Dominick Mesiti of the Port St. Lucie Police explained the arrest saying, "I mean 90 miles an hour in a 40 mile an hour zone is ridiculously dangerous in a residential neighborhood." The Super Speeder law aims to reduce aggressive driving behaviors by imposing stiffer penalties, including potential jail time.
The arrest of Zein was not an isolated incident, as officers also detained several other individuals for various offenses. Notably, Cedrick Powell was halted for a traffic infraction and subsequently identified as a registered sex offender, while Rosangela Cardoso was stopped for a traffic violation and discovered to be in the country illegally. Martin Duran was nabbed for DUI after officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. Remari Bookall, on the other hand, was pulled over for illegal tints and found to have multiple outstanding warrants. Javier Hernandez blew almost twice the legal limit after being stopped for driving without his headlights on, and Jorge Cordero Mella, similarly, was arrested for DUI. These incidents were reported by Port St. Lucie Police's Facebook page, highlighting a variety of enforcement actions taken.
In speaking to how these arrests could impact public behavior, Master Sgt. Mesiti emphasized the consequences of such actions. "I think all actions have consequences and if people actually take the time to think about what the consequences might be if they get caught, then they might slow down," he told CBS12.
Police also hope the Super Speeder law will make drivers think twice before putting the pedal to the metal. "It's noteworthy. This is the first time we've actually charged somebody under the new Super Speeder law in the city of Port St. Lucie. As you know, our chief one of his big pushes is attacking the aggressive driving issue, the excessive speeding issue," Master Sgt. Mesiti added in his interview with CBS12. Residents, like Nora Huebner, told CBS12 that speeding, particularly in adverse weather conditions, is a cause for concern.
