In a concerted effort to boost the security posture of local schools, Pulaski County schools have been awarded over $59,000 for safety enhancements. The generous state funding stems from the Secured School Safety Grant Program. State Reps. Kendell Culp (R-Rensselaer) and Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) have shown support for the initiative, which funnels part of the year's $27 million state investment in school safety into 494 schools statewide. According to a report from Indiana House Republicans, the push includes the strategic move of the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security's umbrella.

"School should be a safe place for students and faculty to learn and work," Culp was quoted in the same statement. Enhanced safety measures, updated warning systems, and well-drafted emergency response plans are all being enabled by the Secured School Safety Grants to maintain safety. It was the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corp, having secured $41,422, along with the West Central School Corp, reeling in $18,037, that are set to benefit from these grants.

Rep. Jack Jordan spoke to the necessity of a broad approach to educational security, explaining that it takes more than physical upgrades to foster a culture of safety. "School security is more than just installing cameras and upgrading locks and windows," Jordan said. "It's creating a culture of safety where students and staff feel protected." He pointed out that granted funds may be strategically employed across a spectrum of needs from the employment of resource officers to the implementation of technology and active event warning systems, as reported by Indiana House Republicans.

The impact of the Secured School Safety Grant Program, initiated in 2013, has been significant, with Indiana allocating over $214 million in school safety through state matching grants to date.
