Putnam County schools have been designated beneficiaries of upwards of $271,500 in state funds earmarked for bolstering school safety. This financial injection is a component of a $27 million commitment to securing educational institutions across the state, courtesy of the Secured School Safety Grant Program, a detail confirmed by State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle). The statewide initiative this year encompasses matching grants that extend to 494 schools.
In a move to streamline the process of enhancing educational safety infrastructures, the Office of School Safety will now be under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security, which aims to consolidate safety efforts and furnish schools with additional support and resources. Baird articulated the importance of this development in a statement obtained by Indiana House Republicans, asserting, "Ensuring our schools are safe and secure is a critical responsibility."
Among the schools reaping the benefits of the grants are Cloverdale Community Schools, securing $46,250; Greencastle Community School Corp. with $72,328; North Putnam Community Schools, $73,075; and South Putnam Community School Corp. receiving $79,920. Baird's statement highlighted the versatility of the granted funds, which can address a spectrum of safety needs, including but not limited to support for resource officers, procurement of equipment and technology, implementation of active event warning systems, threat assessments, and student-parent support service programs.
Since the inception of the program in 2013, Indiana has directed more than $214 million into school safety via state matching grants, an investment that reflects a dedicated and ongoing commitment to the well-being of students and teachers alike. Baird continued, "This funding helps our local districts strengthen safety measures so students can focus on learning and growing," underscoring the program's ultimate goal of fostering a secure learning environment.
