Vigo County schools will receive funding to improve safety through the Secured School Safety Grant Program. The statewide initiative is providing more than $166,000 to local schools to support safety upgrades, according to area lawmakers.
According to the Indiana House Republicans website, Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville) told that the state is investing $27 million in matching grants this year, benefiting 494 schools across Indiana. The program also centralizes school safety by placing the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security.
Local grants include $22,200 for Eastside Christian Academy, $9,250 for Gibault, Inc./Holy Cross School, $49,950 for Saint Patrick School, and $84,728 for the Vigo County School Corporation. Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) said the funds will help schools enhance security.
Since its start in 2013, the program has provided over $214 million for school safety improvements statewide. Additional information is available at Indiana’s school safety hub at in.gov/schoolsafety.
