Washington County schools have tapped into a significant financial vein, securing over $162,000 in state funds aimed at bolstering their safety measures. These awards come courtesy of the Secured School Safety Grant Program, an initiative bringing a collective $27 million to 494 schools across the state for similar purposes. According to a statement obtained by Indiana House Republicans, the program maintains a clear focus on safety as the groundwork for robust education.
State Rep. Karen Engleman, representing Georgetown, emphasized the role of safe environments in the overall academic and emotional well-being of students. "This funding will go toward creating environments where students can focus on learning and thrive academically," Engleman stated. The recent legislative sessions also saw strategic moves with lawmakers channeling the Office of School Safety into the Department of Homeland Security, expanding the safety net through additional resources and support.
Allocations for local schools have been earmarked as follows: East Washington School Corp. with $64,750, Salem Community Schools receiving $51,892, and West Washington School Corp. landing a grant of $46,250. Rep. Chris May from Bedford pointed out that this financial infusion is meant for a spectrum of safety enhancements, from supporting resource officers to fortifying active event response systems.
"It is great to see many local schools take advantage of this grant program," May noted, underlining the goal of fortification of school security and safety. State Rep. Jim Lucas added a historic perspective, highlighting the states ongoing investment — now topping $214 million since 2013 — into school safety through state matching grants. Lucas emphasized, "This program is a benefit to our local communities, identifying each school's needs are and providing resources to address them."
