Residents within a three-block radius were ordered to shelter in place beginning at around 5 p.m., according to FOX 13. Long-term resident Van Walther described the disruption, telling the news outlet that despite the area's changes over the years, the violence was not anticipated.
The house at the center of the incident is owned by Branden Vincent, who rents the rooms out to individuals striving to recover from addiction. From a neighbor's window, he was forced to watch the situation unfold. Vincent candidly spoke to KSL TV, expressing that his property was "not a place you want to bring a friend." He emphasized the home's role as a sanctuary for those looking to turn their lives around. This incident spotlights the increasing violence police have been encountering, following another recent event in Tremonton where officers were injured.
In West Jordan, the shootout ended with the suspect dead and significant damage to Vincent's property. The homeowner told KUTV, "I want to go home," while staring at his bullet-ridden home. He revealed plans to cease renting out the property in the aftermath of the violence and anticipated that repairs could take a month or possibly longer.
Chris Burbank, voicing the toll such events take on a community, told KSL TV, "Anyone losing their life in order to keep our community safe and sound is far too high a price to pay and is really a failure of our system." The incident in West Jordan has resulted in an investigation while nine officers, who discharged their firearms at the suspect, have been placed on administrative leave. It remains unconfirmed if the suspect, Idrees, returned fire during the altercation.
