A woman has died following a shooting incident on Indianapolis' far east side, as reported earlier today. According to the FOX 59, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to reports of a person shot at an apartment located in the 10100 block of John Jay Drive at approximately 3:18 a.m.
The responding officers discovered the victim, an adult female, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Eskenazi Hospital under critical condition but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer expressed to Fox59 that the tragedy appeared to be rooted in "some type of domestic disturbance between her and her boyfriend." As of early Friday morning, no suspect had been taken into custody, and homicide detectives were on the scene, leading the investigation. IMPD has urged anyone with information to contact them or to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
Expanding on the details, WISH-TV reported that the shooting occurred at an apartment complex on John Jay Drive near 38th Street and Mitthoeffer Road. IMPD Captain Weilhammer spoke on the incident, advocating for nonviolent resolution to conflicts, "It appears to be another case of a problem that could be resolved without violence. Talk it out. If you can't talk it out, use a mediator. If that's not going to work out, walk away. Nothing's worth taking somebody's life over like this."
Finally, WTHR added context by indicating the IMPD does not view this event as a threat to the broader community, and the suspect had yet to be identified. Capt. Weilhammer stressed the importance of seeking alternatives to violence, saying "When you're having problems...please don't resort to violence." While the circumstances surrounding the shooting continue to be investigated, IMPD has not released any additional information about the suspect.
